The Mandala Cat & Butterfly captures one of those perfectly feline moments, a curious cat completely captivated by a butterfly resting just within reach. Intricate mandala-inspired patterns flow through both figures, turning the simple interaction into a striking piece of layered wood art.
Crafted from six individually cut layers of Baltic birch, the design builds depth throughout the cat's body, curled tail, face, and the delicate wings of the butterfly. The open cutwork allows portions of each layer to peek through the next, creating intricate patterns that change as you move around the piece.
Each layer is individually stained in coordinating warm wood tones, allowing the natural grain of the Baltic birch to remain part of the artwork. Deep browns create contrast against lighter golden and natural tones, highlighting the curves, swirls, and tiny details throughout the design without relying on painted color.
At just shy of 13 inches tall, 11.5 inches wide, and approximately 3/4 inch thick, the six layers create a substantial profile that's especially impressive from the side. Even the butterfly carries the same dimensional construction, making it feel like it's hovering right at the cat's nose.
