Some pieces are made. This one was truly a labor of love.
Eight individually cut layers of Baltic birch come together to create a sweeping mountain landscape filled with colorful hot-air balloons, winding water, forests, clouds, and distant peaks. At approximately 11.5 inches tall and just under 15 inches wide, this framed piece was designed to draw you in from across the room and reward you with even more detail when you get closer.
A combination of professional-grade paints and rich wood stains gives each part of the landscape just the right feel. Natural wood grain remains visible throughout portions of the mountains and foreground, while carefully placed color brings the sky, water, trees, and balloons to life.
Getting those colors exactly where they belonged took time. The painting process involved repeated rounds of masking, painting, drying, repositioning, and masking again. Painting and detail work alone took approximately 90 minutes, before the eight layers were ever aligned and assembled.
The balloons received just as much attention. Multiple colors and intricate cut details create their patterns, while even the tiny baskets feature a subtle woven texture that is best appreciated in person.
Careful spacing between the surrounding layers allows the balloons and clouds to sit apart from portions of the landscape behind them. As light moves across the artwork, shadows form within those spaces, enhancing the illusion that the balloons are actually floating above the mountains.
At approximately one inch thick, every mountain ridge, tree line, cloud, river, and balloon contributes to the depth of the finished artwork. From straight on, the layers create one continuous landscape. From an angle, the individual layers, open spaces, and shadows reveal just how much went into building the scene.
The completed piece is sealed with a UV-protective coating to help preserve the rich colors, stains, and finish. For the best longevity, we recommend displaying it indoors and away from prolonged exposure to the elements. Sawtooth hangers are securely installed on the back, so it arrives ready to display.
Hand finished and assembled one layer at a time, this is the most labor-intensive piece in our current layered art collection and one where the smallest details are just as important as the overall view.
